Talons Clinch Central Division with 64-41
The Iowa Barnstormers (6-10) finished out the 2008 regular season with a 64-41 loss to Tulsa in front of a record-setting crowd of 10,512 at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield field Saturday night. The crowd came out in force to show their support. The Barnstormers end the 2008 campaign second in the af2 in average attendance, behind only the Spokane Shock. The first quarter started off with the teams matching each other score for score. Iowa struck first with a Jeff Glas field goal. Tulsa's quarterback John Fitzgerald hit Kellen Allen in the end zone for the first of two touchdowns. The Barnstormers kept pace with a second Jeff Glas field goal and a Joe Brannen touchdown strike to Robert Kilow. The score at the end of the first quarter was tied at 13.
The Talons clawed their way to a 31 point second quarter scoring five times. Fitzgerald threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns during the stanza. The second half started off with newcomer Brian Villanueva directing the offense but the 'Stormers still failed to gain momentum. Tulsa picked up where they left off in the first half increasing their lead to 50-26.
Finally the Stormers were able to catch a break when Dusty Kain stripped the ball for a takeaway and Villanueva hit Dodge on a 10-yard TD pass cutting the Talons lead to 50-34. Iowa's Tanner Varner had two interceptions in the second half to keep the 'Stormers in game but just as they seemed to be gaining ground Villanueva was picked off by Reid Delenell at the Tulsa 15.
The next drive Villanueva left the game due to injury. Brannen stepped back in and immediately fired a 9 yard touchdown pass to Tim Dodge bringing the score 57-41 but it was too little, too late for Iowa's comeback hopes. The clock wound down on the season with Tulsa scoring again, making the final 64-41.
