`Battle: LA' tops box office with $35.6 million

The alien invasion sci-fi blockbuster "Battle: Los Angeles" conquered the box office with a $35.6 million debut.
Other new releases performed poorly. The gothic fairy tale adaptation "Red Riding Hood" took in $14 million, while Disney's 3-D animated "Mars Needs Moms!" managed just $6.9 million.
The top 5 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
