Tulsa faces New Mexico in a weekend back-to-back January 13, 2011
The Tulsa 66ers (16-6), fresh off a 2-0 showing at the 2011 D-League Showcase, travel to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Thunderbirds (11-10) this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14th and 15th. Both games are scheduled to tip at 8:30 p.m. CT inside the Santa Ana Star Center.
The games can be viewed online for free via webcast at nba.com/futurecast and can be heard in Tulsa on KAKC 1300 AM.
The 66ers have won eight consecutive games dating back to Dec. 30 and currently sit atop the West Conference standings. The winning streak is the longest in 66ers team history.
Tulsa’s last win came on Wednesday evening in South Padre Island against the Dakota Wizards, 96-92.
The Thunderbirds are coming off of a 98-87 defeat to the Main Red Claws on Tuesday at the Showcase.
Friday will mark the first matchup against the Thunderbirds this season. The 66ers split a pair of contests at home against New Mexico last season.
66ers Put Away Wizards 96-92, Win Eighth Consecutive Game January 12, 2011
Cole Aldrich recorded season highs with 19 points and seven blocked shots and point guard Tweety Carter scored 18 points, including a 3-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining, to help the Tulsa 66ers (16-6) hold off the Dakota Wizards 96-92 Wednesday evening in their final game of the 2011 D-League Showcase in South Padre Island.
The 66ers, who led by as many as 23 points and never trailed in the contest, won their eighth consecutive game of the season and currently stand atop the West Conference.
Latavious Williams led the 66ers in rebounding with a game-high 12 boards. Elijah Milllsap and Jerome Dyson chipped in 15 and 12 points, respectively, and Carter led the team with six assists.
Chris Johnson picked up a double-double for the Wizards (6-16) with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Anthony Goods led the team in scoring with 22. Also scoring in double figures was Dominique Scales with 21, Walter Sharpe with 12 and Vernon Hamilton with 10. Darren Cooper dished out a game-high nine assists for the Wizards.
Next up, the Tulsa 66ers travel to Albuquerque to take on the New Mexico Thunderbirds this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14th and 15th. Both games are scheduled to tip at 8:30 p.m. CT.
2011 NBA D-League Showcase Slam Dunk and Three-Point Contestants Announced January 11, 2011
Marqus Blakely (Bakersfield Jam), Chris Johnson (Dakota Wizards), Dar Tucker (New Mexico Thunderbirds) and L.D. Williams (Springfield Armor) have been announced as the participants in the 2011 NBA Development League Showcase Slam Dunk Contest, which will be held together with the NBA D-League Showcase Three-Point Contest at 9:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
The eight players competing in the Three-Point Contest will be Corey Allmond (Fort Wayne Mad Ants), Andre Ingram (Utah Flash), Marcus Landry (Reno Bighorns), Chris Lofton (Iowa Energy), Scottie Reynolds (Springfield Jam), Jamar Smith (Maine Red Claws), Robert Vaden (Tulsa 66ers) and Booker Woodfox (Texas Legends).
Vaden is 30-70 (.429) from behind the arc this season. That shooting percentage is eighth-best in the league.
The Slam Dunk Contest will be a two-round competition. The four players may complete two dunks in each round, with five judges each awarding between five and 10 points for every made dunk. The two dunkers with the highest composite score after the first round advance to the final round. The player with the highest composite score after the final round wins.
The Three-Point Contest will be a three-round competition, featuring several innovations, including a moveable ‘Money Rack’ consisting of all ‘Money’ balls and increased points awarded for shots made from deeper shooting spots.
From the field of eight contestants participating in Round 1, the four players with the highest scores will move on to Round 2. The two players with the highest scores in Round 2 will then compete in Round 3. The player with the highest score in Round 3 is the champion.
Each competition will air on VERSUS on Jan. 15 and Jan. 29.
While the Slam Dunk and Three-Point Contests are new additions to the NBA D-League Showcase, Tucker is competing as the league’s reigning Slam Dunk champion after winning the Slam Dunk Contest as part of the 2010 NBA D-League All-Star festivities.
